Welcome to the New Village Commons! We’re excited to offer an online community spot to share timely tidbits and regular feature articles in between producing our books. We are inviting our authors to contribute news and views, and we extend the invitation to you, our readers, as well. Here are some of the Commons highlights.

Besides this blog, we are launching a monthly magazine – New Village E-Journal. To start the Year 2008 on the right note, the theme of our premiere issue is “Peace: Another World is Possible.” Author Louise Dunlap has written a thoughtful report on her experience at the first U.S. Social Forum in Atlanta and author Arlene Goldbard has contributed the inspiring keynote she gave to a conference of the Shanti Foundation in Chicago about creating peaceful communities through the arts.

We are happy to introduce our new Video/Audio page, starting with a four-minute except of the video, A Lot in Common, featuring our beloved Karl Linn at the Peralta Community Garden. You also can see fresh footage of New Orleans high school students who are members of Creative Forces, a peer-education project for teens directed by author Mat Schwarzman.

We have added a calendar of author and Press events, including writing workshops by Louise Dunlap and lectures by Bill Cleveland and Arlene Goldbard. If you know other events where our authors should speak or New Village bring a book table, let us know.

Our general website has also been updated and enhanced. You’ll find author pages and introductions of our humble staff, a newsroom with recent media releases, a full description of our parent organization, ADPSR, and a page to thank our supporters! And don’t forget our annotated Resources section – look for new links from Building Commons and Community to organizations specializing in community gardens, civic engagement and public space.

Not only is another world of peace and creativity possible, it’s already showing up!

Lynne

  1. Congratulations and thank you to New Village Press for making this forum possible. It’s one thing to create the beautiful, valuable, inspiring and useful books, but now to have this real-time opportunity to share our work is over the top.

To those of you who make it possible, thanks for the gift.

  2. How great it is to see that Giorgio Di Cicco has found a new cousin in the New Village Commons. He will be thrilled. NVP’s ability to connect ideas and people continues to amaze me, and my sense is that it is on the cusp of something great. Has NVP ever considered convening a group of creative community builders face-to-face to explore common ground and best possibilities for the future?

  3. I was really pleased to read about efforts to restore a sense of community into our urban centers. I have been searching for more community and interconnectedness, with limited success. But slowly connections are forming in my community garden, and most recently, by joining the CoG Community Grocery and meeting people during occasional group work days. I would love to hear about other heart-work which brings people together.

  5. I get giddy when NVP does anything because I know & love them & they remind me I’m on the right path. A “path with heart” as Don Juan described to Carlos Casteneda. We don’t know what life has in store for us. I meet people who are in professions they never thought they’d be in but would have had they known how much joy & purpose they now experience.

I don’t know what I’ll be when I grow up but it won’t be a war monger or captain of an oil transporting ship. I know it’ll be as a social entrepreneur, arts & humanitarian, fund-raiser for worthy causes…I’m at the helm of a leaf in the wind. “Spirit” guides my vessal. NVPs are stars I navigate by.

  8. Hi Lynne!

Always great to get an email, and now look what you’ve done! This is a movement larger than we know, and growing quickly. Glad to know … and hence, learn and expand as we transform everything…
