An interactive new sound sculpture Spiraling Echoes by sound art pioneer Bill Fontana has been installed in the San Francisco City Hall Rotunda.

“Spiraling Echoes engages highly specialized sound equipment mounted inside the Rotunda that will transmit historic and contemporary sounds of San Francisco in ultrasonic beams as narrow as a thread. As you walk through the Rotunda’s main and upper walkways, your path will create a sound composition unique to you.”*

Bill Fontana’s site-specific installations reconnect visitors to the site by bringing subtle sounds – that would otherwise be taken for granted – to the forefront of our attention. His work heightens awareness to the unique details of the site, causing us to experience ‘place’ in a way often overlooked. Here is high-tech community art that expands our sense of place.

The exhibition will be in place through May 8th.

This exhibition was three years in the making and is sponsored by the San Francisco City Arts Commission. Click here for additional event details.
